Battery storage · Stop 04What does a battery need for safety and permits?Safety tests in EU law, fire protection on site, the battery passport and second-life batteries: what a stationary system needs before and during operation.
  • Battery passport: from 18 February 2027, every industrial battery above 2 kWh, every EV battery and every battery for light means of transport placed on the market needs an electronic record with information on the model and the individual battery.
  • Repurposing: EU law defines repurposing as using a battery, or parts of it, for a purpose other than the one it was designed for, such as a former car battery in a stationary system. Its safety documentation must then be reviewed.

  1. Are battery storage systems safe?EU law requires stationary systems to be tested for ten safety parameters, including thermal propagation and fire, and to document further hazards and their mitigation.
  2. Why do some fast chargers have a battery?Peaks of demand are short. A battery charges slowly from a small grid connection and discharges quickly into cars, so a site can offer high power where the grid cannot yet.
