Are battery storage systems safe?

EU law requires stationary systems to be tested for ten safety parameters, including thermal propagation and fire, and to document further hazards and their mitigation.

Battery storage · Stop 04What does a battery need for safety and permits?Safety tests in EU law, fire protection on site, the battery passport and second-life batteries: what a stationary system needs before and during operation.

Stationary battery energy storage systems must be safe during normal operation and use. Their technical documentation must show successful tests for the safety parameters of Annex V, assess other possible hazards, show that those were mitigated, and include instructions for the case that a hazard occurs, such as a fire or explosion. On site, national building and fire rules add distances, detection, access for the fire service and permits.

  1. What is a battery passport? From 18 February 2027, EV batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh need an electronic record with information on the model and the individual battery.
  2. Why do some fast chargers have a battery?Peaks of demand are short. A battery charges slowly from a small grid connection and discharges quickly into cars, so a site can offer high power where the grid cannot yet.
